A new consumer survey conducted by MINI USA reveals various shifts in American consumers’ sentiment toward electric vehicles (EVs) over the last three years. The survey, which repeated the same set of questions used in a 2019 questionnaire carried out by MINI USA, indicates that more Americans – and particularly younger and female consumers – view electric vehicles as a primary car in the household more than any other use case. This represents a shift from 2019 where more respondents selected “commuting car” and “city car” as preferred uses. Commissioned by Engine’s CARAVAN®, the survey further explores consumers‘ level of knowledge about the EV infrastructure in their regions, as well as personal attitudes toward EV ownership and travel needs. more A point that has remained consistent from both surveys is daily travel distance, as 76% of respondents say that 75 miles of battery range is sufficient for everyday driving. Only a 3% increase over the course of three years, consumers’ daily driving distances continue to remain well below the current range of all new electric vehicles on the market today. While vehicle usage has remained consistent, expectations for faster charging times rose over the last three years. This not only signals an improved perception of available charging technology and its progression over recent years, but an increasing expectation that greater improvements in charging is necessary for rapid EV adoption. More than two-thirds (67%) of consumers now believe charging should take no more than an hour, an increase from 59% three years ago. Conversely, education on certain key topics has seen minor change over the period for many consumers, particularly regarding the advancement and mainstreaming of EV technology. About 63% of all respondents in 2022 still consider EV owners to be early adopters, which is only 3% lower over the last three years. While this pioneering connotation may sound complimentary to some, it highlights a need for more mainstream awareness of the accessibility, daily usage, and convenience of electric vehicles today. Greater visibility for charging stations is needed, though some progress has been made. About 35% of consumers now know where their nearest EV charging port is located, a slight improvement from 26% in 2019. “Over the last three years electric vehicles have become more mainstream, making great strides in both technological advancements and in consumer perception,” said Andrew Cutler, Head of Communications, MINI USA. “As MINI is moving to become fully electric by 2030, it is important that we and other EV brands with skin in the game continue to demonstrate that EVs are more accessible and satisfying to drive for everyone.” Another point requiring stronger evangelization is the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit most EV buyers would receive upon purchasing their new vehicle. Strong progress has been made among college graduates (particularly in high-income households), with 50% or more now considering the credit as an important purchasing factor. This attitude falls steeply, though, among consumers with little to no college education or who live in lower-income households, where the tax credit could proportionately be more beneficial. To read more about the Federal Tax Credit available for EV owners, read here. About the MINI Cooper SE With a low center of gravity, a powerful electric powertrain, and dynamic handling, the MINI Cooper SE is a true performance car that retains all the fun-to-drive attributes MINI owners have come to know and love. With an MSRP of $29,900 plus federal EV credits of $7,500, and additional state incentives, the cost for a MINI Cooper SE can be as low $20,000. This makes it one of the most affordable, fun to drive premium EVs on the market. Owners of a MINI Cooper SE battery electric may realize additional saving of up to $1,268 over a year based on driving habits and U.S. national average energy costs. Plus, with most Americans driving less than 50 miles per day, market data shows that the MINI Cooper SE and its 114-mile range works for many customers. Survey Methodology The General Population survey was conducted among a sample of 1,016 adults comprising 488 men and 523 women 18 years of age and older on behalf of MINI USA. The online omnibus study was conducted from April 1-3, 2022.

From the early iterations of the MINI with white contrast roofs painted to stand out at the rally competitions of the 1960s, to the range of new Special Edition MINIs of today, MINIs have served as a unique canvas for motorsport competitors, celebrities and owners to express their individual creative spirit with myriad customization capabilities. To highlight the extent of this creative spirit, MINI USA recently sent out a message to MINI fans and owners calling for them to share their own customized MINIs through a social media outreach campaign. Following the community-wide search for the most compelling customized MINI vehicles, MINI USA shared the stories of five owners and their customization journeys earlier this month. The search took place over two months on social media, with the automaker calling for MINI owners to submit photos and descriptions of their vehicle with the hashtag #MINICUSTOMIZED. Five creative MINI owners were selected based on the strength of their vehicle’s customization story, the visual appeal of said customizations, and the strength of any under-the-hood modifications. more “It’s always a joy to see MINI’s feisty and eccentric identity translate so fluidly to our owners, and these five members of the MINI community perfectly encapsulate our signature creative spirit,” said Rah Mahtani, Brand Communications Manager, MINI USA. “We hope that this series inspires other existing and potential MINI owners to express themselves through their vehicle in fun and exciting ways.” The five MINI owners that were recognized have made a wide range of customizations, each based on their own distinct inspirations and goals. Andy Lee’s Top Gear fandom informs his taste in cars, and when he saw the potential to modify a MINI Clubman online, he fell in love right away. Andy got his hands on a 2011 MINI Cooper S Clubman five years ago, and performance is the name of the game with his customizations. According to Andy, no other MINI sounds like his, and his air ride suspension gives the MINI Clubman versatility for riding low and slow or attacking a steep mountain road. Further modifications, both aesthetic and performance-related, include a rebuilt turbo, remanufactured engine, 3rd Gen headlights, and custom blue plaid interior accents. What Dave Skinner thought was a MINI Countryman parked at a local dealership turned out to be a rare 2014 MINI Cooper S Paceman, and he had to have it. Once the MINI Paceman made it to his garage, Dave went to work with customizations. A pink and black Union Jack graphic sprawls over the side of the vehicle, paying homage to MINI’s heritage with a bit of a twist. Meanwhile the car’s name, “Lexi,” is printed on a sticker and laid over the rear MINI badge. The Paceman is also fitted with aftermarket wheels, with plans to add white and pink powder coating to them in the near future. Chuck Davis first caught sight of a MINI Coupe in the spring of 2016, and within the week became the proud owner of a 2013 MINI Cooper S Coupe. The vehicle’s design had stopped him dead in his tracks and led him to turn his own vehicle into an eye-catching speedster with a modification list pricing out at over $10,000. Among his external customizations, Chuck added backward #44 stickers so he could take his R58S on the track in addition to white stripes with red trim. Additional modifications include Koni yellow adjustable struts, Eibach lowering springs, a Hotchkiss 25.5 mm rear sway bar along with 4 camber control arms, a complete Willwood brake kit with 2-piece rotors, and a set of Rennline track mats. Zreston Costello grew up always wanting something unique to drive. While others opted for the same sports cars with the same design choices, Zreston embraced the stand-out size, speed, and modification possibilities of his MINI Cooper S F55. With the immediate goal of turning heads, he put together a combination of various red decals across the exterior, as well as modified OEM rims, to complement the vehicle’s Volcanic Orange body paint. Performance-wise, Zreston carried out ECU, Stage 1, and Stage 2 tuning with plans for further enhancements on the way that will make his MINI stand out for its power in addition to its appearance. David Schofield’s MINI journey began in 2006, with he and his wife having owned a total of six MINI vehicles, including his current 2019 Cooper S Convertible. His most obvious customization is the car’s custom stripe running over the Union Jack convertible roof, while 17” Neuspeed wheels, dark grey Union Jack scuttles, checkered mirror caps, and a stubby antenna round out its exterior customizations. David also made practical modifications to the convertible’s interior, installing a solid stainless steel shift knob and e-brake handle from Whalen Shift Machine, and a Cravenspeed phone mount. Their stories were featured from April 4-20 in a series of posts across MINI USA’s social media channels. Click the above links to read them alongside photography of their customized vehicles.

Spring has sprung, and so have the annoying potholes wet winter weather left behind on some of your most frequented roads. And unfortunately, these divots in the asphalt can wreak havoc on your vehicle. While they might not seem like a huge issue, potholes can cause costly damage to tires, suspensions, and other vehicle parts. A report from AAA indicates that drivers in the U.S. spend an average of $3 billion on pothole damage repairs each year. Luckily, there are several smart moves drivers can make to help minimize and hopefully steer clear of the damage that these rocky pavement pits might cause. Check out the roadmap below on how to avoid pothole pitfalls driving forward: Don’t drive through puddles When it comes to puddles, be cautious. Don’t drive a vehicle too fast through them since there may be hidden potholes that are deep and extra dangerous. If the vehicle does collide with a deep crater, don’t panic. Pull over to a safe spot on the highway or shoulder of the road right away. Slow down, check for cross traffic, change lanes and come to a stop to check for damage. Stay alert on unfamiliar roads When driving on an unfamiliar road, watch out for hazards. Because drivers often anticipate and avoid potholes in areas they travel often, they might not notice new ones in less frequented areas. Drivers should keep their eyes peeled in new places and proceed with caution. Keep a safe distance between vehicles Maintain a safe distance between vehicles on the road. Drivers will be able to spot potholes faster and more easily when they can see what’s coming. Make it a point to maintain at least a 3-second following distance between the vehicle in front of you. And remember, allow for extra space on highways and byways because it’s possible to miss a pothole when following too closely at faster speeds. Keep up on car maintenance If the vehicle’s tires are inflated properly when it hits a pothole, it lessens the chance of damage. When a vehicle hits a pothole with low tire pressure, the rim is more likely to be damaged and the suspension could suffer. Underinflated tires may also increase the chances of losing control of your vehicle or getting a blowout. Overinflated tires will not give as much during impact with a pothole, which could also damage the suspension. Shocks and struts in good condition, with properly inflated tires can cushion the blow. Drive slower in the dark Less visibility during nighttime means it can be tougher to avoid potholes. Reduce the chances of driving over them and minimize damage by taking it slow on the roads. This defensive driving tactic is especially helpful when it’s rainy or excessively windy. Know how to hit an unavoidable pothole Some potholes just can’t be avoided. One of the best things to do is slow down to avoid incurring vehicle damage. When the car hits a pothole, grip the steering wheel tightly to prevent it from jerking. Just don’t brake before hitting a pothole because doing so can cause damage. Source: Michigan Department of Transportation
